The History of Woolworths

Woolworths was founded by Max Sonnenberg and first opened its doors on October 30th, 1931. First located on Plein Street in Cape Town - in the dining room of the Royal Hotel that had just recently closed down.

As an immediate success story, followed by 2 more stores opening soon after - making it clear there was a demand for top-quality food, clothing, and household items. In 2007, the Good Business Journey was established to set public targets and goals in sustainability for the entire company.
