Checkers History and Founding
Checkers was founded in 1991 when the Shoprite Group acquired the branch name, which had 169 stores at the time and over 16 000 employees across Southern Africa. Today, Checkers has two formats that are popular in the communities: supermarkets and large-format hyper stores.
Checker is made up of two primary formats: Checkers: Supermarkets which are being constantly improved and aligned to healthy eating and cleaner living. Checkers Hyper: Large format store with a wider range than the supermarkets. This includes food, household items, clothing, etc.
